Description
The intense geodynamic activity at the Italian plate margins, associated with sea level oscillations and climate change, represents an important aspect connected to the actual coastal environment. The Marine GeoLab of the University of Milano-Bicocca has been involved in several bathymetric surveys, which have enabled mapping a wide area of the Calabrian margin, highlighting interesting features and characteristics suitable for understanding the geomorphology of coastlines, along with their ongoing modifications. This digital terrain model has been produced for the study of a sector of the Ionian Calabrian Margin, first through the VECTOR Project (Vulnerability of the italian coastal area and marine Ecosystems to Climatic changes and Their rOle in the mediteRranean carbon cyrcles), and more recently the MAGIC Project (Marine Geohazards Along the Italian Coast). These two projects have led to the elaboration of a high-resolution, 3-D model of a wide sector of the Calabrian seafloor, produced by using a Multibeam Echosounder System. Data processing and elaboration has enabled investigating the shelf and slope domains, recognizing interesting features at a different scales (canyons, incisions, slope, slide scars and deposits), and formulating preliminary hypotheses about the local margin evolution.
